Oblivion
Oblivion is a visual journey into humanity's darkest shadows, a black-and-white narrative capturing pain, loss, and forgotten injustices. Each image is an open wound, an invitation to reflect on the power of a gaze, the strength of a moment, and what we so often choose to overlook.
The Last Breath Beneath Fragile Ribs
With his hand resting on his bony chest, as if trying to hold onto one last heartbeat, this child looks upward, perhaps searching for a breath of relief or an impossible answer. His frail body is a silent cry, a symbol of all childhoods betrayed by hunger. His image, still and sorrowful, becomes a doorway to a collective tragedy: that of the most vulnerable, crushed by indifference. Just a few days after this photograph was taken, his breath too faded away, suffocated not only by hunger but by the apathy of a world that has chosen to look the other way.
The Last Breath of Innocence
When I took this photograph, I never imagined how deeply it would mark me. The expression of this child, his lost and helpless gaze, pierced my soul. It wasn’t just hunger I saw; it was the weight of a betrayed life, a stolen future. A few days later, I learned that he hadn’t made it. He died of malnutrition. Not because therapeutic food was unavailable, but because that food, meant to save him, had been sold on the black market.
In Congo, this is the system: food meant to nourish children like him is turned into a commodity, enriching a few while thousands of innocent little ones die of hunger. It’s a colossal business, a cycle of corruption that devastates an entire generation. This photograph, like the one before it, has become much more than an image to me: it’s a testimony. I can’t stop thinking about his face, about that last gesture of humanity, as if he were trying to protect what little remained of his life. I still wonder today how many other children never even had the chance to be seen, to be remembered.

Marked Skin, Wounded Soul: The Shadow of Monkeypox
With a piercing gaze, marked by the scars of monkeypox, this young face conveys a strength that surpasses the fragility of childhood. The spots on their skin tell an invisible battle, a disease that not only afflicts the body but leaves a mark on the soul as well. Each trace, each scar, is a testament to resilience in a world that all too often overlooks the pain of the smallest among us.
Marked Skin, Wounded Soul: The Shadow of Monkeypox
The body of a child bears visible signs of monkeypox, a disease that adds further suffering to an already fragile life. The skilled hands of a healthcare worker examine the marks, symbols of a battle against precarious medical conditions in vulnerable areas. This detail tells the story of the quiet and essential work of those who fight every day to restore dignity and health to the youngest among us.
Marked by Monkeypox- Shadows of Suffering, Strength in Standing.jpg
In this raw and unfiltered portrait, a child with a body marked by pustules gazes into the lens with a heart-wrenching strength. The contrast between their innocent eyes and the visible wounds on their body tells a story of vulnerability and a battle against a disease that should never touch a soul so young. The black background amplifies the power of the image, forcing the viewer to confront the harsh reality of childhood suffering.
Marked Skin, Wounded Soul: The Shadow of Monkeypox
The face of a child marked by monkeypox tells a story that should never belong to childhood. The gaze is intense, laden with a dignity that endures despite visible and invisible scars. This image serves as a reminder of the fight against indifference and the courage that emerges where vulnerability seems to prevail, a universal symbol of resilience and hope.
A Circle of Witnesses, but Who Truly Listens?
Wide-open eyes, too large for such a fragile body. As the rescuers’ hands move swiftly to administer therapeutic food, the indifference of a world that turns its back lingers all around. In a place where hunger reigns supreme, even a single meal can mean the difference between life and death. This is a daily battle, a race against time, a last attempt to give this child a future that has been denied to them.
The First Struggle: Surviving Human Cruelty
In this image, a malnourished newborn is gently lifted by protected medical hands. The fragility of their body tells a story of deprivation, of an uncertain future in a country torn apart by conflict and humanitarian crises. The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently the scene of one of the world’s most severe food emergencies, where every day children like this fight to survive. Behind every breath lies an invisible battle, a silent cry for solidarity and concrete action. How many children must suffer before the world chooses to listen?
Surviving One Bite at a Time
A child desperately consumes a sachet of Plumpy'Nut, a therapeutic food that represents the thin line between life and death for millions of young lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Severe malnutrition affects over 45% of children under the age of five in some regions of the country, exacerbated by endless conflicts, mass displacements, and a global food crisis that spares no one. This image, a raw and powerful symbol, challenges us to look beyond the moment and ask ourselves: how much longer can the world ignore such a deeply rooted tragedy?
The Face of Hunger: Condemned to Indifference
A child visibly suffering from acute malnutrition sits in silence, their body marked by a battle against hunger. The photograph captures the harsh reality of the humanitarian crisis, drawing attention to the urgent need for action to save innocent lives.
Cries of Fear in a Deaf World
A moment of childhood pain captured in a single shot: the desperate cry of a child, held in the hands of another. In this simple yet intense scene, vulnerability and the harshness of a reality that spares no one, not even the youngest, are palpable. It is a stifled cry lost in the silence, a snapshot of shared fragility, where comfort seems like a distant mirage.
Scars of a Battle Never Chosen
A lost, distant gaze, trapped in a reality of suffering and silence. Marked skin, thin arms that seem too weak to bear the weight of life. This child bears the marks of a struggle they should never have had to face, a childhood shattered by hunger and neglect. Every line on their face tells a story of resilience in a world that all too often ignores the most vulnerable.
Stolen Childhood: The Burden of an Uncertain Future
This image employs extreme contrast to isolate the subject from the context, creating a direct and distraction-free visual impact. The depth of black is achieved through precise side lighting, delicately sculpting the contours of the face and emphasizing the texture of the skin and the emotions captured. The absolute black background amplifies the sense of solitude and vulnerability, while the use of low aperture and controlled ISO settings preserves every detail without compromising the overall softness.
Goma: The City of Tents, a Refuge for Thousands of Suspended Lives
Seen from above, this is one of Goma's 12 refugee camps, a temporary haven for thousands of people fleeing the devastating conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The expanse of tents seems endless, an improvised city where hope and pain coexist in every corner. Goma currently hosts over 1.7 million internally displaced persons, with more than 700,000 new arrivals in recent years. Each tent holds stories of loss but also of extraordinary resilience: lives in limbo, forced to reinvent themselves daily amid cramped spaces and an uncertain future. This camp is not just a physical location but a powerful symbol of a humanitarian crisis too often forgotten.
The Weight of War Etched on the Face
Her steady gaze and skin marked by time tell the story of a life torn apart by war. This woman, now a refugee in one of Goma's camps, left everything behind to escape the violence that devastated her village. Each wrinkle carries the memory of a loss, of a life that will never return. Yet in her eyes, there is still a spark of resilience, a silent plea not to forget those forced to survive the unthinkable.
The Weight of War Etched on the Face
The scars of war are not only seen on bodies but are also written on faces. This woman, bearing physical pain compounded by the anguish of exile, is one of thousands of refugees in the camps of Goma. The swelling on her face is a symbol of untreated suffering, a wound that tells the story of a system that abandons the most vulnerable. Yet, despite it all, her eyes refuse to surrender: within them lies the silent cry of someone demanding dignity, justice, and humanity.
The Gaze That Bears the Weight of a Broken World
This portrait, taken in the heart of one of Goma’s refugee camps, captures the intensity of human pain and resilience. The marked face of this man, who lost his wife and two daughters under brutal circumstances, emerges against a black background, emphasizing the dramatic power of black and white. The wrinkles, like maps of suffering, and the deep, accusatory eyes tell a story that words cannot convey. The close composition pulls the viewer directly into his reality, removing any distractions and focusing on raw emotions. Light gently falls across the details of his face, highlighting the contrast between hope and resignation, life and loss. Beside him is only his young son, the last remnant of a past now destroyed. This portrait is more than a photograph: it is a silent cry for humanity and justice.
The Silent Strength of Suffering
Portrait of a man in the Goma refugee camp, where he and his family have sought refuge after fleeing a devastating attack by the M23. Unlike many others, he hasn’t lost anyone. Their courage and quick thinking allowed the family to escape to safety, finding shelter in this transitional place. Photographically, the portrait is an example of minimalist and powerful composition. The black background emphasizes the individuality of the subject, separating him from the chaos of the context, while the black and white conveys a sense of timelessness and gravity. The texture of his face, accentuated by soft lighting, tells a story of struggle and determination. His proud posture and steady gaze, fixed on the viewer, communicate a calm resolve—a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
I Am a Child Soldier
In this image, the close-up of the child’s hand gripping the AK-47 is a powerful and heart-wrenching symbol. The young, still soft skin contrasts starkly with the cold hardness of the metal. The fingers wrap around the weapon as if it has become a part of him, a prosthesis of violence that has shaped his childhood. This detail urges us to reflect on stolen innocence and a life marked by war.
I Am a Child Soldier
In this shot, the child soldier looks directly at the lens with a piercing and determined gaze. The light highlights his young age, but his eyes tell a story of forced maturity and pain. Beside his face, an AK-47 stands as a symbol of a brutal reality that has stripped him of his childhood. His steady and intense expression embodies the weight of his condition, a childhood smothered by violence.
I Am a Child Soldier
In this image, the child soldier rests his head against a tree, his gaze conveying profound exhaustion and a mature sadness. The soft light on his face emphasizes the delicate features of his young age, while the shaded surroundings suggest a moment of respite in a life filled with conflict. The contrast between the harshness of the uniform and the vulnerability in his eyes tells a story of a life torn between childhood and war.
I Am a Child Soldier
In this shot, the child soldier rests the rifle on his shoulder with a gesture that seems familiar and natural, almost as if it has become a part of him. His direct, serious, and intense gaze conveys a sense of defiance and awareness. The blurred outline of the trees in the background contrasts with his sharply defined figure, isolating him and making him the undeniable focal point of the scene. The contrast between his youth and the role forced upon him is heartbreaking.
I Am a Child Soldier
In this photo, we don’t just see a child; we see the symbol of a generation deprived of its future. This young soldier, holding an assault rifle in his hands, embodies the horror and injustice of armed conflicts that continue to steal the innocence of over 350,000 children worldwide. The black background reflects the isolation and emptiness of a denied childhood, leaving room for one clear message: childhood should never hold a weapon.
Feeding Hunger with Waste: The Tragedy of Survival
In this image, a cow wanders among the waste at the Dandora landfill, searching for food in an environment that doesn’t belong to it. The scene is surreal and desolate: an animal, a symbol of life and sustenance, immersed in a landscape of plastic and debris. In the background, blurred figures and marabou storks emphasize the sense of decay and forced adaptation in an ecosystem overwhelmed by human waste.
The Keeper of the Landfill: Surviving Among Humanity's Remnants
This marabou, with its scarred beak and feathers weighed down by dust and waste, is a silent witness to the Dandora landfill. It lives among human trash, adapting to a habitat that doesn’t belong to it, feeding on whatever it can find. It stands as a symbol of a nature bent and transformed by our wastefulness, a creature embodying resilience but also the sorrow of a world where even animals must adapt to the remnants of our recklessness.
The Keeper of the Landfill: Surviving Among Humanity's Remnants
In the heart of Nairobi, the Dandora landfill is a world of its own, where human lives and waste coexist in a cycle of exploitation and resilience. Every shovel’s movement and every bent body tell the daily struggle to survive amid destruction. This shot captures the relentless labor of those living on the margins, in a landscape that reflects the shadows of our consumerism.
The Machine and the Man
At the Dandora landfill, one of Africa's largest and most hazardous open-air dumps, over 2,000 tons of waste are deposited daily. Thousands of people, including women and children, work in extreme conditions, exposing themselves to severe health risks from toxic fumes, heavy metals, and chemical waste.
With a population of over 50,000 people relying on the landfill for survival, Dandora stands as a symbol of a humanitarian and environmental crisis. Here, work involves digging through waste to recover recyclable materials or discarded food, often sold for mere cents. Meanwhile, machines continue to operate, shaping an artificial mountain of degradation that threatens not only the health of the residents but also the surrounding ecosystem.

Men, Machines, and Birds: The Fragile Balance of Decay
In this image, a bulldozer carves its way through heaps of waste as men and women search for materials to collect. Among them, flocks of marabou storks scour the trash, symbolic creatures of an unnatural cycle of life. The scene is surreal, an unsettling coexistence of machines, humans, and animals, all searching for something useful in a sea of refuse. The bulldozer, representing industrial power, stands in stark contrast to the fragility of the people and animals struggling to survive in this extreme environment.
Between the Waste and the Sky
Two figures move among the mountains of waste at the Dandora landfill, sacks on their backs like the burdens of survival. Above them, a bird takes flight, a symbol of freedom that feels distant and almost ironic in this setting. The air is heavy with debris, fragments of a world that has chosen to ignore those living on the margins. It is an image that captures the struggle for dignity in a place where everything seems lost.
The Procession of the Invisible
In this image, the Dandora landfill transforms into a grim procession, a march of forgotten souls moving through the world's refuse. Men, women, and children, cloaked in despair, follow a forced ritual dictated by hunger and desperation. The machinery at the center of the scene becomes a symbol of domination, almost a modern idol setting the rhythm of their survival, while vultures circle nearby, embodying the wait for what remains.
The city in the blurred background watches indifferently, a silent witness to this slow march toward resilience or surrender. There is no dignity in the plastic bags dragged by worn hands, only the weight of an existence lived on the margins, sustained by what others discard. This photograph is a portrait of human despair, a vivid reminder of what progress has left behind: the faces of survival, trapped in an eternal ritual between degradation and hope.

The Mountain of Shame: Lives Buried Under the World’s Waste
Each filled sack is a glimmer of hope for those working in this hell of plastic and metal. At the Dandora landfill, people climb mountains of waste, searching for a means of survival where others see only trash. This shot reveals the immense human effort in a struggle that seems endless.
The Abyss of Humanity: Digging Through the Remains of a Consumed World
A man and a machine, two different forces yet equally essential in this battle against waste. At the Dandora landfill, human determination is matched against the endless expanse of debris. This image is a portrait of resilience and courage, where every step and every shovel strike confront an overwhelming burden.
Dignity in Pain: Eyes That Defy Indifference
In this portrait, a woman gazes into the distance, her face resting on her hand, with an expression that carries the weight of a life filled with struggles and sacrifices. Her wrinkles and intense gaze speak of a quiet strength, of resilience enduring daily hardships. It is a face that tells a story of hope and pain, a living testament to feminine courage in a hostile environment like the Dandora landfill.
What a beautiful smile
This portrait captures the essence of human joy, a smile that bursts like a radiant wave against the darkness. The wrinkles around the eyes are not marks of fatigue but of stories lived, of days spent under the sun and in the struggle for existence. The woven hat becomes almost a crown, a symbol of dignity and strength. Here, life manifests in its most powerful form, a laugh that defies silence and celebrates the beauty of the moment.
The Silent King
This portrait captures one of the three Antesaka kings of Madagascar, a living symbol of an ancient tradition. Descendants of migrants from Southeast Asia and East Africa, the Antesaka have developed a unique culture rooted in ancestral rituals, respect for nature, and a deep connection to the land. The humble yet intense gaze of this leader conveys wisdom and resilience, embodying the story of a people who, despite the passage of time, continue to preserve their identity.
